Architect elected to lead Sydney council committees

Architect and urban planner HY William Chan has been elected as chair of the City of Sydney’s Local Pedestrian, Cycling and Traffic Committee and deputy chair of the Transport, Heritage, Environment and Planning Committee.

Chan was elected to the council in 2021 as a member of lord mayor Clore Moore’s independent team.

He is an advocate for design excellence as well as sustainable and affordable housing initiatives, and has contributed to city-shaping projects across Sydney including urban renewal, infrastructure and social housing.

Chan was unanimously elected by his fellow councillors for the leadership positions and will additionally serve as an executive of Climate Emergency Australia.

He said that Sydney has the opportunity to transform itself in the wake of the pandemic, with improved transport, increased innovation and cultural capital, and an accelerated sustainability plan.

“With the converging crises of the pandemic, climate change, social injustice and housing unaffordability, we are at a most critical moment in time where the City’s work must further to safeguard the liveability of future Sydneysiders,” said Chan.

“Our 2050 vision for the City of Sydney is courageous and pragmatic. It’s backed by the community with extensive data analysis, particularly from the lessons learnt during Covid-19.”
