Construction has begun on a vibrant new pavilion and public domain for a Western Sydney community.
Designed by Chrofi and JMD Design, the project will be the first in a series of neighbourhood spaces for the Mount Druitt and Blacktown area, providing much needed community infrastructure.
The Mount Druitt town centre was the first entirely new town centre built in New South Wales in the 1970s, created to support the area’s high concentration of residents living in social housing.
The existing town centre “suffers from a lack of amenities, ill-defined and inactive edges, poor passive surveillance and rundown community infrastructure, perpetuating the negative reputation represented in the media,” Chrofi said in a statement.
Over the years, the local community has developed a grass roots culture of musical talent, leading to a need for a performance and community events venue.

The Mount Druitt Pavilion and Public Domain will feature a shade canopy, a permanent stage for public events, a playground, ping pong table, as well as group and individual park seating.
The colourful patterns of the project reference the works of Garage Graphix Community Art Inc, a 1980s and 90s screen printing workshop in Mount Druitt.
Blacktown mayor Tony Bleasdale said the upgrade of the square “will provide a much-needed boost for this busy public thoroughfare in the heart of Mount Druitt.”
A sod-turning ceremony was held on 28 November, and the project is expected to be finished by mid-2023.
