First look at Melbourne secondary school upgrade

The Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA) has released a first look at the designs for the upgrade and modernization of a secondary school in Melbourne’s outer suburbs.

Designed by Architecture Architecture, the South Oakleigh Secondary College upgrade will include an extension of the gymnasium, a major refurbishment of the science block, a new tiered amphitheatre and a dedicated science courtyard for outdoor learning.

The project is being delivered under the Oakleigh Education Plan, a region-wide endeavour to rejuvenate and reform education through new teaching systems and infrastructure. Alongside the secondary college, the Oakleigh Education Plan covers Huntingdale Primary School and Oakleigh South Primary School.

South Oakleigh Secondary College received $992,000 towards the project in planning funding through the 2020-2021 Infrastructure Planning and Acceleration fund and a further $8.93 million through the state budget of 2020-2021.

Melbourne-based Architecture Architecture is well versed in the creation of learning development spaces, having designed inclusive and dynamic playscapes across 11 sites in Victoria, as well as a new student precinct for the University of Melbourne.

Spaces will be designed to be flexible and adaptive to service the evolving needs of school students into the future.

According to the VSBA, the upgrade and modernization is expected to be complete in the fourth quarter of 2023.
