The Queensland government has announced the appointment of the architects who will design the Brisbane Athletes Village – a key part of the main Victoria Park precinct, two kilometres north of the CBD, which will serve as the heart of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
A media communique from the government noted that the design of the village, which is set to host 10,000 athletes and officials across 1,800 apartments, “is in the hands of a diverse team of leading local, national and international architects.”
Appointed by project partners Lendlease and RNA, the design team includes Woods Bagot, Cottee Parker, DBI and Plus Studio, in collaboration with UK architectural practice Howells. The collective will lead the design of the village’s buildings to ensure they function both during the games and in legacy mode, when they will be converted into permanent build-to-rent or build-to-sell housing, according to Lendlease.
BVN has also been appointed to lead a multidisciplinary masterplanning team to steer the future of the 22-hectare Brisbane Showgrounds site, owned by the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland. In addition to the new housing, the showgrounds redevelopment will include an upgrade of the 20,000-seat main outdoor arena for hosting games events, as well as the ongoing Queensland Ekka.
The government said, “The new event infrastructure is set to cement Brisbane Showground’s role as a vibrant inner-city community and major entertainment destination well into the future.”
