A new three-storey boutique hotel, designed by Richards and Spence with interiors by Studio Manifold, has opened in Byron Bay.
Located on Jonson Street in Byron Bay, The Bonobo by Raes comprises 33 hotel suites and 41 residences, catering to both short and extended stays. Shared amenities include a lobby lounge with seating for up to 50 guests, a food and beverage offering, a central courtyard, a rooftop pool and wellness spaces featuring traditional cedar saunas, ice baths, a eucalyptus steam room and a treatment room for facials and massages.
Landscape design by 360 Degrees Landscape Architects anchors the building around a verdant central courtyard.
The new venture is the latest addition to the hotel and hospitality group’s Byron Bay portfolio, which includes the popular Raes on Wategos – refurbished by Tamsin Johnson in 2017 – and a 2024 guesthouse expansion, also designed by Tamsin Johnson.
Raes describes the residential suites as “flexible,” with rooms that can be adjoined to create larger multi-bedroom residences. Each suite includes a kitchen and a laundry.
Throughout the project, a material palette comprising natural timbers, brick and stone textures and plaster finishes is intended to create “a sense of calm and understated luxury.”
