Expressions of interest are now open for a forthcoming exhibition, on show as part of Adelaide Design Week 2026, which will explore unrealised works of architecture and design.
Organised by the South Australian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects’ Emerging Architects and Graduates Network (EmAGN), Unbuilt will cover projects across multiple stages of fruition, from drafted competition entries to proposals and designs.
By shifting the spotlight from completed buildings, the exhibition aims to highlight the meticulous process behind the tangible outcome. The call-out seeks drawings and visualisations, which will be exhibited alongside models, projections and immersive installations.
The exhibition will be on show at North Adelaide’s Hebart Hall – a state-heritage-listed former Lutheran school currently undergoing a period of transition – as part of Adelaide Design Week, which will run from 14–18 October.
Applicants must be emerging architects within 15 years of graduation or five years of launching their practice. Despite its South Australian focus, the curators will also select two projects by interstate practitioners.
“Emerging architects produce an enormous amount of work that is never seen publicly,” said exhibition organisers Jasmine Placentino and Tayla Scholefield.
“Unbuilt is an opportunity to give some of those ideas a platform, and to create greater visibility for the people and practices behind them.”
Co-organiser Nick Carfora reiterated, “There is something compelling about architecture that exists only as an idea.”
“Projects remain unbuilt for countless reasons, but that doesn’t diminish the value of the ideas behind them. Unbuilt gives those ideas a physical presence,” he added.
Following the exhibition, Unbuilt is intended to continue online, with the establishment of an open, national online index.
Expressions of interests close 31 August and can be made online.
