Construction has begun on a $12 million expansion of Launceston Airport’s Departures Hall, designed by Cumulus Studio.
The expansion project is part of a staged masterplan for Launceston Airport, developed by Cumulus Studio. The Departures Hall phase of the plan is set to add 600 square metres to the existing gate area and a new boarding gate, alongside a full refurbishment of gates three and four. The works will increase leisure space for travelling passengers, renewing three amenity blocks and adding three new venues.
Launceston Airport CEO Katie Cooper said the works aligned with a long-term vision to become “Australia’s favourite regional airport.”
“By increasing capacity and improving the functionality of our departure gates, we’re creating the infrastructure needed to support more services and passengers which sets us and our region up for long term growth,” said Cooper.
“We’ve created a bespoke airport experience here at Launceston that reflects the character, beauty and identity of Tasmania, and gives travellers a genuine sense of place from the moment they arrive.”
Launceston Airport has undergone several upgrades since 2008, including the transformation of the Launceston Airport Retail Hall by Buchan (formerly The Buchan Group) in 2017, which went on to win the Award for Commercial Architecture at the Australian Institute of Architecture’s 2017 Tasmanian Architecture Awards.
The project is being co-funded by the airport, various airline partners and the Tasmanian government.
