Sydney projects claim gold WAN Awards

The winners of the 2026 World Architecture News Awards have been announced, with Australia claiming three gold titles for transport-related projects in Sydney.

In the Transport category, Gadigal Station by Foster and Partners, with Cox Architecture as executive architect, and Waterloo Metro Station by John McAslan and Partners each won gold. Gadigal Station was praised by the jury as a “beautiful application of materiality and artwork to transform a simple metro station into a series of interesting spaces and passenger experiences.” Likewise, Waterloo Metro Station was celebrated for its layering of Indigenous-led art and heritage to shape intuitive travel through the building.

Located above Gadigal Station, Indi Sydney by Bates Smart won a gold award in the Residential category. The jury said of the build-to-rent tower, which is Sydney CBD’s first, that “the project demonstrates respect for the heritage context, integrating contemporary materials that engage with the historic surroundings.”

In the Adaptive Reuse – Small category, Robert Simeoni Architects won a bronze award for their Palmerston Street House in Carlton, Melbourne, which draws on a context of ad hoc alterations.
