An apartment within a Roy Grounds building and a Carlton home that doubles as a home and office space are among the 120 shortlisted projects across 15 categories in the Australian Institute of Architects 2026 Victorian Architecture Awards.
Twenty-one residences were shortlisted across the Residential Architecture – Houses (New), Residential Architecture – Houses (Alterations and Additions) and Interior Architecture categories.
Of the shortlisted residences, Palmerston Street House by Robert Simeoni Architects and Studio 8 by Partners Hill appeared most frequently, each shortlisted in both the Residential Architecture – Houses (Alterations and Additions) and the Interior Architecture categories.
Set within Roy Grounds’s heritage-listed 1941 Quamby building, Studio 8 by Partners Hill reconfigures a basement flat into an eight-room residence, incorporating strategies of material reuse and passive environmental design.
For Palmerston Street House, Robert Simeoni Architects reworked an existing Carlton house for dual domestic and work use, adapting it for both living and working through targeted interventions – a garage becomes a place to meet, while an upstairs bedroom is now a concealed outside terrace.
Eight homes were shortlisted for Residential Architecture – Houses (New), while four were shortlisted for Interior Architecture, which also included eight non-residential projects.
