A $1.5 billion project known as “The One” at 1 Queens Bridge Melbourne is destined for Southbank’s riverfront after approval by the Minister for Planning with the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP).
The permit enables the construction of a skyscraper designed by Cox comprising premium apartments, including branded residences, a luxury hotel and boutique offices. Led by developer PDG, the scheme was lodged for planning assessment in April last year.
Sitting at 5,059 square metres, the site will also be home to numerous amenities and services for resident-use.
A media communique claims, “The tower draws on the movement of the Yarra River, with a sculpted facade articulated by six vertical pleats running the height of the building.”
A key proposal within the scheme includes the preservation and “restoration and adaptive reuse” of the heritage-listed Queens Bridge Hotel. Plans will see the establishment reimagined with hospitality and public upgrades, including a rooftop venue.
The redevelopment further envisions Queensbridge Square recast as a “contemporary civic destination and strengthening its role as a key pedestrian plaza along the Yarra River.”
“This is the most significant Planning Permit approval Melbourne has seen in recent years,” PDG founder and managing director Vince Giuliano claimed.
“For more than 15 years, this site has remained underutilised. This approval enables us to deliver a project that will contribute meaningfully to the revitalisation of Southbank, restore and reactivate an important heritage building, and create a new civic and hospitality destination for Melbourne,” he added.
The project is planned to launch early 2027.
