On 14 June, Docomomo Australia will host the first public open day dedicated to the work of architect Paul Couch, offering visitors access to five houses across Toolern Vale and Mount Macedon in Victoria. Couch began his career working under Robin Boyd, where he developed an interest in construction detailing and material expression before establishing his own distinctive architectural approach over the following five decades. Houses open for the day include Couch House, Murdoch ‘Lowland Farm’ House, Cremasco House, Pradolin House and Laird House.
In this session on 24 June, founder of Fiona Lynch Office Fiona Lynch will discuss the Lee Mathews retail store on James Street in Fortitude Valley – one of her first projects completed after establishing her own studio – alongside Melbourne Penthouse, an art-filled residence characterised by a sensory, multi-layered material palette. She will be joined by co-founder of Vokes and Peters Stuart Vokes, who will present Balmoral House (2007), an early project exploring adaptable and sustainable living, before discussing La Grotta, the Brisbane Home he designed for his own family over ten years.
The Australian Passivhaus Association’s annual Thrive conference will return to Melbourne this 25–26 June, bringing together more than 300 built environment professionals to discuss the latest developments in Passivhaus design, delivery and certification. The two-day event will feature presentations, case studies and discussions focused on scaling Passivhaus in multiresidential and commercial settings, adaptive reuse and high-performance building standards, alongside an exhibition of materials and products from more than 20 industry suppliers.
