Matthieu Pommier Paints “Seasons” for DesOrdes Creativas in Ordes

Matthieu Pommier has painted “Seasons” / “Estacións” in Ordes, Galicia, for the 2026 edition of DesOrdes Creativas. The mural takes the form of a still life, bringing objects associated with different seasons together in a single composition. The festival assigned Pommier a wall on Rúa Paraíso, placing his interpretation of a traditionally domestic genre on a town street.

Pommier draws on the bodegón, a Spanish tradition of depicting everyday objects, and on vanitas, the still-life genre associated with the passage of time and mortality. For him, the seasonal contrasts speak to consumption and a growing distance from natural cycles. The work’s skull and pumpkins carry another connection to place: Pommier links them to Samaín, the Galician tradition associated with remembrance of the dead.

Those references give “Seasons” more than one measure of time. Its objects suggest the rhythms of rural life around Ordes, while the skull brings the limits of human life into the same frame. Pommier describes the mural as a symbolic dialogue with the region; the still-life format lets that conversation unfold through familiar things rather than a panoramic view of the landscape.

The work was made for DesOrdes Creativas’ 19th edition, which brought artists to sites across Ordes in the summer of 2026. Here, the festival setting matters most as the reason this image can be encountered outside: a meditation on seasons and mortality painted at the scale of a street.
