Ryuichi Sakamoto’s “KAGAMI+” Reframes the Concert in Osaka

Ryuichi Sakamoto & Tin Drum | KAGAMI+ remains on view at VS. in Osaka through October 12, 2026. Presented within Grand Green Osaka’s Umekita Park, the project uses mixed reality to bring Sakamoto’s captured piano performance into a space shared with its audience.

Sakamoto developed KAGAMI with Tin Drum, led by Todd Eckert, over the final four years of his life. The work premiered at The Shed in New York in 2023. For the Osaka presentation, the project takes the expanded form of KAGAMI+, introducing a version developed for its Japanese venue.

Visitors wear specialised transparent headsets to encounter the three-dimensional performance and accompanying visual work. The setting shifts the familiar relationship between an audience and a recorded concert. A performance is given a spatial presence, asking visitors to consider how technology can change the experience of music held in an archive.

That question is especially interesting for readers following art in shared environments. A recording usually reaches its audience through a fixed screen or speaker arrangement. A spatial presentation introduces another set of decisions about proximity, movement and the place from which someone watches. The experience depends on the setting as well as the material being preserved.

There is also a public-space extension at Kansai International Airport. The airport’s KIX CULTURE GATE programme announced a related installation on the first floor of Terminal 1, combining a grand piano playing a programme based on Sakamoto’s preserved performance data with LED monitors introducing the world of KAGAMI+.

An airport offers a very different encounter from a booked exhibition. People may come across the work during a journey, bringing an unexpected musical moment into a place normally organised around transit. That change of context is a compelling part of the project’s reach beyond its main venue.

The VS. exhibition runs from June 27 to October 12, 2026, with timed admission and published opening hours of 10am to 8pm. Mondays are generally closed, with holiday exceptions. Consult the official exhibition website for ticket types, access requirements and current arrangements before visiting. The airport installation is a separate presentation, rather than the headset experience at VS.
