Tymon de Laat Paints “Shared Harvest” on an Uden Apartment Block

Tymon de Laat has completed Shared Harvest (Vrucht der verbinding), an 11-by-7-metre mural on an apartment block in Uden’s Flatwijk neighbourhood. Painted in spray paint and latex for housing corporation Area, it centres on a young girl of Dutch and Korean descent wearing a hanbok and carrying a basket of cherries and cherry blossom. The wall stands at Wilhelminastraat 1, on a road into town. (areawonen.nl)

For De Laat, the cherry connects two places with traditions around the fruit and its blossom. Behind the girl, warm grey tones and the landscape of nearby Bedaf bring the image back to Uden. He describes the basket as a way of picturing what younger generations inherit from those who came before them. A circle in the composition joins young and old, reflecting the neighbours whose lives informed the design. (areawonen.nl)

Those conversations took place over months of preparation with Flatwijk residents. Area commissioned the mural after renovation covered an earlier painting on the building’s façade. The housing corporation says residents’ memories of the neighbourhood and its former cherry orchards helped shape the new work. Smaller local references remain within the basket, including Peerke Verschiet—a figure featured in the previous mural—and Uden’s Sint-Petruskerk. (areawonen.nl)

De Laat frames the painting as a tribute to Uden’s past and to the people now growing up there. Its portrait reaches beyond the town, while the harvest basket holds its history close. (areawonen.nl)
