A “hugely ambitious and brilliantly conceived” project has taken out the Australian Grand Prix at the 2021 Dulux Colour Awards.
The judges lauded 22 William by SJB for “committing to a single colour and so artfully executing its use in such an impactful way,” they said.
The judges awarded the New Zealand Grand Prix to Central Hotel of Naumi Hotels by Undercurrent. “The Central Hotel in Queenstown displays a discerning depth of colour, comprehensively articulated,” they said. “It is memorably original and wonderfully playful.”
Across the categories, the judges were “impressed by the breadth and implementation of colour in the conceptual and finished projects, particularly those that manipulated and mastered their immediate surrounds.
“We considered the designs holistically; the way colour encapsulated a space, highlighted the architectural form and is supported through soft furnishings and furniture.”
The judging panel for the 2021 awards comprised Jefa Greenaway (Greenaway Architects) Melissa Bright (Studio Bright), Patrick Loo (Common Space, NZ), Sarah-Jane Pyke (Arent and Pyke), and Suzannah Waldron (Searle x Waldron Architecture).
Dulux colour and communication manager Andrea Lucena-Orr said, “We are awed by the courage and sophistication of this year’s award winners. From public works to private homes, the degree of ambition and excellence demonstrates that designers, architects and clients all recognise the integral role of colour in our built environment and its capacity to transform our experience.”
