Green light for Western Sydney medical research building

State significant development approval has been granted to the new Lang Walker AO Medical Research Building in Western Sydney.

Designed by a BVN-led team, the $47.5 million medical education and research facility will consist of a “series of twisted boxes” that break down the mass of the five-storey building to create an “undulating form”.

The new facility will be delivered in partnership with South Western Sydney Local Health District, the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research and UNSW Sydney. Walker Corporation executive chairman Lang Walker donated more than $20 million to establish the new medical building.

Named after its property developer benefactor, the Lang Walker AO Medical Research Building will be a cornerstone of the redevelopment of Campbelltown Hospital and the broader Campbelltown Health and Education precinct.

Western Sydney University’s vice chancellor and President Professor Barney Glover said the announcement of the development approval was welcome news to the university.

“The Lang Walker AO Medical Research Building – Macarthur will be an internationally-recognised facility that has the health and wellbeing of the fast-growing south-western Sydney region at its heart,” said Professor Glover.

Walker added the project would deliver on a vision for a dynamic hub for medical education and research, “to transform Campbelltown Hospital into an internationally recognised research precinct, fostering greater scientific, clinical and industry collaborations.”

The architect has committed to achieving a 5 Star certification from the Green Building Council. Construction is expected to commence in the last quarter of 2022.
