Cox Architecture has completed a new 2,000-seat performance venue in western Sydney that is inspired by the fluid movements of a stage curtain.
The privately funded Sydney Coliseum Theatre, in the suburb of Rooty Hill, was first proposed in November 2017.
The design of the centre is inspired by the trappings of the theatre, with the curving white concrete façade a reference to a stage curtain.

“The conceptual narrative for the design stems from the concept of transcendence, with the journey from the outside world to the magic of performance reflected through form, materiality and colour,” said the architects in a statement.
At the heart of the building is the performance venue, which can be reconfigured depending on the requirements of any given event. Up to 1,300 retractable seats can be added to the 2,000 fixed seats. The event space is served by three foyers and seven bars.

Brooke Lloyd, Cox director, said, “This venue is for everyone, from ballet lovers to rock enthusiasts. The honest and unpretentious materiality is almost chameleon-like in its ability to suit everyone and every occasion.”
The theatre has been funded by Rooty Hill RSL. The club hopes that the centre will dilute the proportion of its funds derived from gaming.
