Thomson Adsett has produced schematic designs for a dedicated mental health hospital facility for Cairns in Far North Queensland.
Construction of the $70 million facility is due to begin this year. It will provide therapeutic services to aid in the recovery of acute mental health.
It will replace the existing mental health unit, which will be demolished, and integrate with Block A of Cairns Hospital. Patients have been moved into a refurbished wing of the existing hospital and will be treated there while the new facility is built. The facility’s entrance will be located on the corner of Kerwin and Lake Streets.
“The artist impressions, created by architects Thomson Adsett, have evolved as part of a consultative design process, with a range of stakeholders including community and carer groups,” said Qld health minister Steven Miles.
“The key design principles have included developing a healing environment that is sustainable, culturally appropriate, enabled with wi-fi technology and safe for staff, consumers and families.”
The facility will contain 53 beds – an increase of five patient beds. The rooms have been designed to enable natural light to penetrate inside the interior. The design also provides for shared “consumer spaces” and therapeutic outdoor areas.
