From an outstanding field, a project with “a brave and bold approach [that] delivered theatre, art and drama” has been awarded the top accolade in the 2020 Australian Interior Design Awards, announced via a live broadcast on Friday 29 May.
The jury said the results of the awards were “a breath of fresh air, with the best projects possessing a strong sense of place.”
“All of the awarded projects eschew flashing gimmicks and fleeting trends,” said the jury.
The winner of the Premier Award for Australian Interior Design, Di Stasio Citta by Hassell, “is the result of a genuinely rigourous design process and while it’s photogenic, artfilled spaces have Instagram appeal, they also deliver in the flesh.”
Winners were announced across seven primary categories as well as the Sustainability Advancement Award, Best of State Awards for Commercial Design and Residential Design, the Emerging Interior Design Practice Award, Best International Design and the Award for Interior Design Impact.
The 2020 jury comprised: Angela Biddle (director, Scott Carver), Ljiljana Gazevic (director, SJB), Kelvin Ho (founding director, Akin Atelier), Patrick Kennedy (co-founder, Kennedy Nolan), Rachael McCarthy (studio director, Bates Smart), Sarah-Jane Pyke (principal, Arent and Pyke), Eva Sue (principal, Woods Bagot) and Stuart Vokes (co-founder, Vokes and Peters).
The jury is convened by Geraldine Maher, principal of Geraldine Maher Design, and Equilibrium Consultant’s John Gertsakis advises the jury on sustainability issues.
