The Naomi Milgrom Foundation has announced it has commissioned Venice-based Map Studio to design the 2021 MPavilion.
Map Studio was originally commissioned for the 2020 iteration of the annual architectural installation at Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Gardens. However it was postponed due to COVID-19 and MPavilion’s program of events were held at various locations and online.
“As an open-access, democratic space, MPavilion performs the crucial role of inviting people from all walks of life to engage in conversations around design, architecture and culture, and take an active part in the meaningful development of their own civic spaces. Map Studio is honoured to play such an important role in the cultural life of Melbourne and the reanimation of its city centre after lockdown,” the practice said in a statement.
Map Studio was formed in 2010 by Traudy Pelzel and Francesco Magnani who both have decades of experience as practitioners and academics. The studio specializes in the sensitive renewal of existing buildings and spaces.
Its completed works include the renovation of the Porta Nuova Tower at the Venice Arsenale and the Asplund pavilion for the Vatican’s first exhibition at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2018.
“We have followed the sensitive, deeply site-responsive work of Map Studio for some time, and couldn’t be more excited to see their pavilion spring to life in our first season back in the Queen Victoria Gardens,” said Naomi Milgrom. “In helping to reestablish and strengthen architectural dialogues between Melbourne and the rest of the world in the wake of the pandemic, this partnership with Map Studio is a great source of pride and celebration for the Foundation and MPavilion.”
The design of Map Studio’s MPavilion is expected to be revealed in July 2021 and the pavilion will open on 11 November.
