A pop-up park the size of Victoria’s State Library forecourt will be created next to the Queen Victoria Market in Melbourne, beginning the transformation of the current asphalt car park into 1.75 hectares of public open space.
The City of Melbourne and the state government are together investing $2 million into the park through the Melbourne City Recovery Fund. The council says the new space will be brought to life with live music, community events and recreational activities.
“The transformation of the car park into an activated pop-up park with green space and a rolling program of events and activities will offer another reason to visit both the market and city,” said councillor Roshena Campbell, who heads the city activation portfolio.
The park’s creation will see the removal of 115 outdoor parking bays, but the council noted that 500 new underground parking spaces became available at the Munro development by Bates Smart and Six Degrees Architects.
Councillor Rohan Leppert, who is in charge of the environment portfolio, stressed the importance of green space in the city.
“We know green open-space is highly desired in the inner city and that’s why we’re continuing to invest in new parks and gardens across the municipality,” he said.
“This pop-up park will help us meet the needs of Melbourne’s growing residential and worker population, while also supporting local businesses and helping to combat the urban heat island effect.”
The temporary park is the first stage in the council’s plans transform the car park into public open. Works are scheduled to begin in August 2021, and the park will be open for at least two years.
