Adelaide’s Thebarton Oval to be revamped

AFL team the Adelaide Crows have revealed plans to redevelop Thebarton Oval in the western suburbs of Adelaide, designed by urban design and architecture practice City Collective.

The club announced it has selected the site as the location of their new headquarters, following a previous attempt to secure the former Brompton Gasworks site, which was refused by the state government in 2021.

The 9.2 hectare Thebarton Oval site has two sporting fields – one the size of Adelaide Oval and a second is similar to Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The 9.2 hectare site would boast two adjoining ovals – one the size of Adelaide Oval and a second replicating the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The proposed facility would host a grassed training area, hydropools, and rehabilitation and medical centres. Plans also include public green space, a cafe and an interactive museum for the community. A new skate park, soccer pitch and playground are also in the pipeline, pending the state government’s final plans for the North-South Corridor motorway link.

Fences around Thebarton Oval will come down to provide access to locals, with the club declaring there will be no restrictions to the public in terms of access outside of the Crows’ training times.

The club’s Chairman John Olsen said the project is estimated to cost between $75 million and $80 million, with the club currently negotiating with relevant stakeholders and seeking to secure financial backing from the state government.

The Crows have been located at Football Park in in West Lakes since entering the AFL in 1991. The club is expected to move to its new location in 2025.
