BVN has designed a new $300-million home for the Australian Taxation Office in Canberra, which is set to unite all of its employees under one roof.
The proposed six-storey building will accommodate more than 33,000 square metres of floorspace organized around a central atrium and circulation stair.
ATO staff currently work across two sites at 21 Genge Street and the Canberra Centre in Civic, and the new headquarters in Barton, located 500 metres from Parliament House, will bring together its more than 2,000-strong workforce.
The proposed building will target a 4.5-star NABERS energy rating and a 5-star GreenStar rating.
ATO chief operating officer Jacqui Curtis said the building will take into account changed work practices brought about by the pandemic, with a flexible design and unallocated workspaces.
“If required, it will have the ability to support growth in the future with a ratio of less than one desk per staff member,” said Curtis. “This will enable the best use of space in the new building and is consistent with the approach we have taken for new and refurbished buildings over the past few years.”
The ATO will join a host of other government agencies, including the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Finance, the Attorney General’s Office, the Australian Government Solicitor’s Office, and the Australian National Audit Office, all located in Barton.
Construction is expected to begin April 2023.
