The Australian Capital Territory government has released the designs of the proposed Canberra Institute of Technology at Woden Town Centre designed by Gray Puksand.
The practice was appointed to design a 22,500-square-metre Woden campus as part of the Lendlease Building consortium in May 2022.
The campus will include a suite of new facilities, including smart classrooms, a youth foyer, a new “light-rail-ready” transport interchange and training spaces. It is designed to host 6,500 students with smart classrooms, learning environments, commercial kitchens and hands-on training spaces.
Connecting with Ngunnawal Country, the building exteriors on campus are inspired by local fauna and the Brindabella ridgeline landscape, featuring smooth lines and a recessive colour palette, along with opportunities for outdoor recreation. Interior designs will also take advantage of natural light and incorporate timber features throughout.
The restaurant/cafe space alongside the boulevard provides casual seating options for CIT students and the public.

During an earlier consultation period, the local community expressed a desire for a sustainable project for Woden, with activity at ground level with places to gather, socialise and connect. They requested better connectivity between arrival points and local destinations; protection from weather through covered walkways; and the creation of a safe and inclusive environment.
In response, Gray Puksand’s design will deliver a 6 Star Green Star rating with an all-electric campus. Designs feature a central precinct with public toilets, secure bike storage, covered walkways, ample outdoor seating, informal gathering and green spaces, as well as a ceremony space, all linked by a pedestrian boulevard connecting the transport interchange and Woden Town Centre.
The concept designs can be viewed on the ACT government’s website.
