Murcutt, Candalepas to collaborate on central Sydney tower

Australia’s only Pritzker Prize laureate Glenn Murcutt and two-time recipient of the Australian Institute of Architects’ Sulman Medal for Public Architecture Angelo Candalepas have been appointed to design a mixed-use project for Sydney developer Central Element.

Located at 271 Elizabeth Street, the project will deliver 53 residences along with ground-floor retail. The site is currently home to the Hyde Park Inn.

The design will draw upon the work of architect Bruce Dellit, who designed the Anzac Memorial in the neighbouring Hyde Park, and in particular, the architectural fenestration qualities of the memorial.

“Elizabeth Street represents one of the most important boulevards in the city,” said Nathan Chivas, managing director for Central Element.

“With the rare development opportunity to transform the site into a premium mixed-use property, we chose to appoint Glenn Murcutt and Angelo Candalepas, who are some of the most celebrated and important architects in Australia, to challenge the standards of design and redefine benchmarks of design.”

Candalepas said the pair are pleased to have been appointed the task of the redevelopment, describing it as an opportunity “that will take the city into the future for liveability and lifestyle.”

Candalepas and Murcutt were also appointed in 2019 to collaborate on the Manly Beach headquarters for charity Royal Far West.
