Smart Design Studio's proposed Fremantle hotel

A development application has been submitted to the City of Fremantle for a U-shaped hotel designed by Smart Design Studio on an historic site the heart of the city.

Located adjacent to the Fremantle Markets, the site was home to the former Spicers Building, built in 1899, which was demolished in the 1970s to make way for a car park.

The proposed building will sit comfortably alongside Fremantle’s historic architecture and existing public spaces, taking into account the height and scale of the urban fabric.

Reaching six-storeys, the 117-room hotel will include alfresco dining, a ground floor lobby, retail spaces, a rooftop terrace and a swimming pool.

Plans for 7-storey boutique hotel in Fremantle.

There will be a mixture of room types with six of the rooms specifically designed for accessible use. The U-shaped design of the building also means that more than 75 percent of the rooms will have balconies.

A generous courtyard space with a circular oculus opening to the sky is a central feature for the proposed design. An existing limestone wall on the site, dating back to 1852 – prior to the original Spicers Building – will be incorporated into the new building.

The development application outlines the project’s sustainability strategy, which capitalizes on the site’s natural light and cross ventilation, while also maximizing the roof area for harvesting solar energy.
