Tour iconic midcentury homes in Melbourne’s bayside

For one day only, the public will have the opportunity to see inside of four iconic midcentury homes in Melbourne’s bayside as part of the Beaumaris Modern Open 2022.

Beaumaris Open is a not-for-profit organisation run by a committee of local volunteers committed to campaigning for the preservation of local heritage icons.

Established in 2017, the organisation’s mission is to celebrate, educate and promote public awareness for the value of preserving the midcentury architecture of Beaumaris.

Beaumaris Modern Open 2022 is the organisation’s third Open event and returns after a three-year hiatus, providing the unique opportunity to see inside some of Beaumaris’s sympathetically restored and outstanding exemplars of unique midcentury architecture by esteemed local architects.

“Beaumaris has such a wealth of mid-century architecture and no two homes are the same,” said Beaumaris Modern president Fiona Austin. “This reflects the incredible number of up-and-coming young architects who were experimenting with new designs and new materials during the 1950s and 60s.”

The four selected homes open for self-guided tours will be revealed to ticket holders upon registration, but Beaumaris Modern said they comprise an architect’s private home, a modest midcentury home, a “collector’s paradise” and a sympathetic completion of a well-known midcentury-modern architect’s “original vision”.

“Celebrating our midcentury architecture is not simply considering the original, but also appreciating that these homes can be very easily renovated for modern living,” said Austin. “And it’s far more sustainable than knocking over and rebuilding.”

Beaumaris Open will take place on Sunday 16 October from 12pm to 3pm from the Beaumaris Bowls Club where tea, coffee, and food will be available to purchase. Tickets are $50 for Beaumaris Modern members and $70 for general admission.
