Architectural drawing skills celebrated in new Victorian scholarship program

Victorian students undertaking a master’s degree in architecture will soon be able to apply for a new annual scholarship initiative, giving one candidate the opportunity to refine their architectural hand-drawing skills through an overseas educational program.

Under the 2024 program, the successful applicant will be granted an amount in excess of $10,000, enabling them to undertake a course of study overseas. Students in the process of completing an architecture master’s degree at an accredited Victorian university will be eligible to apply, with entries set to open in 2024.

Borne out of an exhibition curated by renowned architects Bob Sinclair and Roger Nelson, the Australian Institute of Architects established the new Sinclair-Nelson Drawing Scholarship as a means to celebrate the craft of hand-drawn architectural drawings and draw greater attention to the value of the art form.

Following a passionate discussion at a cocktail party about the disappearing art of hand-drawing in architecture, Sinclair, Nelson and artist Graeme Wilkie decided to curate an exhibition showcasing hand-drawn architectural illustrations at Wilkie’s gallery, the Qdos Fine Arts Gallery in Lorne, in March 2023. An auction was held as part of the 2B or Not 2B exhibition, with proceeds distributed to the Institute for the development of the scholarship.

The scholarship was officially launched on 14 November at the Robin Boyd Foundation, with exhibition contributors and representatives from Victorian universities present, as well as Bob Sinclair, Roger Nelson and Graeme Wilkie.

The 2B or Not 2B exhibition and auction will be held biennially.

Full details about the 2024 scholarship will be published by the Victorian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects shortly.
