The School of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney has appointed three professors of practice for the first time.
The appointees will be tasked with contributing to, and shaping the direction of the school and the discipline. They each have diverse professional experience in the industry.
“Beyond a conventional understanding of the architectural practitioner role, these practice professorships each break the mould and offer new and key perspectives on architecture not as an industry or commercial enterprise but as a civic, cultural and social engagement and action,” said head of architecture, Dagmar Reinhardt.
Olivia Hyde is director of design excellence at Government Architect NSW. She will bring a strategic, urban and policy perspective to the position and “expose [students] to the vital role that architects and other built environment design professionals can play in government as advocates for good design,” she said.
Kate Goodwin will bring an international perspective as head of architecture and Drue Heinz Curator at Royal Academy of Arts London. “I will champion the cross-fertilization of ideas and expand student output to include alternate modes of practice, such as curating,” she said.
Qianyi Lim is co-director of Sibling Architecture. She said, “Helping students’ understanding of what it means to be an architect today will largely shape their ideas of practising architecture for the Australian community and built environment and as a global approach.”
Hyde, Goodwin and Lim will work together to broaden the university’s links with the community.
