Architect appointed for Australian Pavilion at Expo 2025

Buchan will lead the design for the Australian Pavilion at Expo 2025 in Osaka on behalf of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT).

The World Exposition is held every five years as a global gathering of more than 150 countries, dedicated to finding solutions to pressing contemporary issues. Countries are invited to build pavilions in the host city to showcase exhibitions that best exemplify their national identity.

The 2025 Osaka will follow the theme “Designing future society for our lives”. It will focus on developing best practices from around the world to drive co-creation among the global community to address social and environmental issues.

The Australian Pavilion will be themed “Chasing the sun” in celebration of the country’s “60,000-year indigenous history and bond with the sun to power the spirit of our people, and act as a conduit for cultivating inspiration, creativity, and innovation,” said the DFAT.

“The pavilion will be a symbol of the warmth, energy and optimism of the Australian people, and take design cues from the Australian landscape,” said Buchan creative lead Dong Uong.

Lead architect Nataly Ernst added Buchan’s design will be guided by sustainable design principles and materials. “Our goal with the pavilion is to make an indelible impact, without leaving a trace,” said Ernst.

Buchan will partner with Japanese architectural and design firm Nikken Sekki to deliver the project. The practices have enjoyed a long-standing professional relationship, having collaborated on several projects over the last decade.

The 2025 expo will run from 13 April to 13 October, with organisers anticipating more than 28 million visitors to attend.
