Construction begins on The Standard, Fitzroy

Construction has commenced on The Standard, Fitzroy, six months after the announcement the international hotel brand was preparing for a Melbourne arrival.

Architecture practice Woods Bagot has designed the building, with interior design practice Hecker Guthrie taking on the task of the interior fit out.

Reportedly costing $60 million, the project will feature 126 rooms over seven storeys, as well as a rooftop and pergola with views overlooking the city.

Woods Bagot said the design has taken many cues from Fitzroy’s longstanding industrial history so that the hotel typology will be apropriate to its local context.

The design features steel-framed windows and weathered steeled cladding as a nod to the suburb’s industrial history.

“This proposed boutique hotel is a contextual response in terms of its built form and materiality,” a spokesperson for the practice stated. “The material palette is simple and robust and acknowledges the industrial character of the area.”

The seven-storey design features a cladding of weathered steel that has been perforated for a textural facade. The large steel-framed windows are a nod to Fitzroy’s industrial urban landscape.

The Standard is a boutique international hospitality brand with current locations in New York, Ibiza, Bangkok, to name a few. The Rose Street site in Fitzroy will mark the hotel brand’s first ever Australian location.

Construction is expected be completed in 2023 with hotel operations commencing in the second quarter of the same year.
