JCB-designed social housing complex approved

Wangaratta council in Victoria’s north-east has approved a 44-unit social housing complex designed Jackson Clements Burrows.

The development located just outside the town centre will replace 16 dilapidated single storey units that are existing on the site. Uniting Care Vic/Tas will be the owner and operator of the complex.

The design for the proposed complex consists of three buildings, four storeys each, that will be connect to each other via bridges.

The buildings will be made from a mix of concrete, brick, metal and timber.

Wangaratta councillors voted unanimously to support the proposal.

Councillor Jack Herry described the project as “a pretty robust proposal that […] is providing a much needed form of housing and increasing the diversity of options for our community.

“We have to remember particularly that people who are vulnerable members of our community don’t stand a lot of chances in the broader housing market.”

Councillor Irene Grant added, “The fact that people require social housing is a big issue in our community and we can’t turn out backs on that.”
