Second building proposed for Sydney’s forthcoming Bradfield City Centre

Plans have been unveiled for a second Advanced Manufacturing Research Facility (AMRF) in the forthcoming Bradfield City Centre.

The lodged development application proposes the establishment of a three-storey low-rise named Second Building. The facility would accommodate spaces for research and prototype development in manufactured products. Planning documents indicate the building would house a high-bay advanced manufacturing hall, a research laboratory with two open-plan cleanrooms, and seminar and collaboration spaces. It will also contain industry-aligned commercial tenants.

The centre is the second building to be proposed in Bradfield City Centre. If approved, it will be sited adjacent to the first Advanced Manufacturing Research Facility designed by Hassell, with both buildings to form part of a wider innovation hub within the new city centre.

Designed by Architectus, Aileen Sage Architects and Jacobs, the form of Second Building wraps around a central courtyard. The design team collaborated with First Nations spatial design practice Bangawarra on building form, spatial arrangement and material selections that make meaningful connections to Country. Taking inspiration from woven Aboriginal dilly bags, the facade incorporates a multi-layered and transparent quality to exterior shading.

The proposed landscape design by Tyrell Studio includes a series of communal green areas, courtyards and rooftop spaces.

The project will aim to achieve a 5-star Green Star rating and a Net Zero Operational Carbon rating through the integration of hybrid mass timber and low-carbon concrete materials, a bio-solar roof, water-conservation systems and solar shading.

The proposed design was developed from the original Business Case Functional Design Brief by Nguluway Designinc. It is, as the name suggests, the second building to be proposed for Bradfield City Centre.

The second AMRF building is expected to be finalised in 2026, while the first is anticipated to complete in 2024. The State Significant Development Application (SSDA) for Second Building is now on exhibition until 17 June 2024.
