Sunshine Coast Open House program launched

Two Gabrielle Poole houses, an 1896 lighthouse and a diverse mix of beach houses old and new are among the architectural highlights in the Sunshine Coast Open House program, launched at the Caloundra Regional Gallery.

The 2021 Sunshine Coast Open House weekend, scheduled for 23 to 24 October, will see 25 buildings of historical or architectural significance open to the public, with a range of guided and self-guided tours on offer.

Among them are the Caloundra Lighthouses – a heritage-listed pair of lighthouses built in 1896 and 1968 respectively – and the Crew House and Quadropod House by the late Queensland architect Poole.

Also on the program is John Railton’s 1969 Wilson Beach House, one of the few Railton houses in its original state, as well as Tim Bennetton Architects’ 2010 Moffat Beach House, a renovation of a classic mid-century beach house.

And into the region’s hinterlands, there’s the state-heritage listed Bankfoot House, built in 1868 as a stop-off point on the journey to the Gympie goldfields, as well as the elegant Pattemore House, built in 1907.

Speaking at the launch of the program Lindy Atkin, Sunshine Coast Open House committee chair and Australian Institute of Architects Qld Chapter councillor, said the event was about encouraging the general public to explore, re-examine and engage with the region’s built environment. “This is the one weekend each year when locals and visitors can enjoy rare access to our region’s buildings and have the opportunity to meet the people, architects, designers, planners, engineers, and historians whose contributions make the Sunshine Coast such a special and unique place,” she said.

“Sunshine Coast Open House prides itself on showcasing the rich architectural diversity of the region and provides a unique opportunity for people passionate about the coast to explore and discover its inspiring architecture and cultural heritage.”
