Design update to $541m Ballarat hospital redevelopment

The Ballarat Base Hospital will be getting two new entrances as part of its $541.6 million redevelopment, with the main entryway relocating from its former Drummond Street position.

State MP Jaala Pulford just released designs for a new main entry on 13 April, which will relocate from Drummond Street to a new Sturt Street location.

The Victorian Health Building Authority appointed Lyons as the principal architect in 2021, with preliminary concept designs released in June.

The design modification is intended to improve access for patients and emergency vehicles, as well as deliver better short-term parking and safe drop-off zones.

Greater accessibility was identified as a high-priority concern from the community consultation period, during which locals contributed more than 1,000 articles of feedback and recommendations.

The Victorian Health Building Authority said the relocation of the main entrance will unlock the currently congested site and improve access for patients and families.

“The community’s input has been critical to ensuring the redevelopment reflects the people it serves,” said Member for Wendouree Juliana Addison.

“The lack of short-term parking and poor accessibility were all major issues – we’ve listened, and this is reflected in the new design of our hospital,” said member for Buninyong Michaela Settle.

The redevelopment of the Ballarat Base Hospital will provide the capacity for an additional 4,000 surgeries every year. Once completed, the upgraded hospital will be in a position to address 18,000 more emergency patients and an extra 14,500 inpatients per year.

Construction on the redevelopment has already commenced with cmpletion expected in 2027. For more information visit the Victorian Health Building Authority website.
