The transformation of a semi-detached house in North Bondi was named the top residential alteration and addition project in NSW for 2022 at the state’s architecture awards.
Home to architect Anthony Gill, the house challenges conventions, particularly notions of privacy, with its multi-modal spaces and exposure to street life.
The communal areas designed with the footprint of the existing dwelling open directly to the street, enable community interactions. While upstairs, a new living area and open air bath and laundry epitomizes the architect’s novel approach planning.

The jury said this home is “a rare gem amongst suburban homogeneity.”
“There is a sense of generosity to the street: the building is distinguishable but not overbearing, and large openings encourage a sense of community through casual interaction with passers-by.
“Restrained yet inventive detailing further confirms that this project is likely to become a memorable point of reference amongst Australian architects, and a slow-burn kind of love for locals.”
