Fender Katsalidis has designed a $20 million winery development for Levantine Hill Estate in Victoria’s Yarra Valley.
The three-storey building will include areas for events, wine tastings and presentation, as well as an underground barrel storage facility.
The proposed winery will be located adjacent to an existing cellar door and restaurant, also designed by Fender Katsalidis and completed in 2015. The design will complement the architecture of existing building.
The proposed building will be a barrel vault structure made of steel purlins and corrugated iron cladding. It will also include a skylight along the roof and integrated opening for cooling and natural ventilation.
Karl Fender, who is a close of friend of the estate’s founder and property developer Elias Jreissati, said the design is inspired by the landscape of foothills and agricultural land associated with grape growing and wine.
“The soaring vaulted presence of the wine production building, situated between native eucalypts and the undulating vineyard is visually heightened by the beautiful backdrop of distant rolling mountains. This building belongs here.
“The design pays homage to the winemaking process and is a reflection of the brand’s pedigree. It will be a point of attraction for both design and wine lovers, enhancing the dining and lifestyle experience.
“By visually integrating the building with the rolling landscape and using materials synonymous with regional structure, we achieve a design that’s in harmony with the natural and agricultural surroundings.”
Construction is underway and the building is expected to be completed in late 2020.
