The Western Australian government has released a new 20-year masterplan for Perth Zoo, designed by Hassell and Iredale Pedersen Hook.
The masterplan includes several new developments that will provide new wildlife experiences for visitors.
The first two development will be underway before the end of 2021 – a new cafe and a new function centre, which will be located in the green space at the centre of the zoo.
The masterplan also includes a new orangutan enclosure that will feature six large tents and a boardwalk through the tents; animal overhead tunnels, an extension of the African Savannah to create new vistas and lookouts and an engaged meerkat exhibit; a new tree house, and nature play area; a Tiger and Sunbear precinct; and a plaza-style entry from the Windsor Park side of the Zoo.
A new conservation centre will also allow public to see procedures underway in the veterinary hospital
The WA government has allocated $43.5 million to kick start the project, as well as kick start a donation drive through an online portal on Perth Zoo’s website.
“The master plan will ensure our world-renowned zoo continues to provide new wildlife experiences for Western Australians and visitors into the future, and deliver more room for animals to roam,” said premier Mark McGowan.
WA environment minister Amber-Jade Sanderson added, “Perth Zoo is a Western Australian conservation tourism icon that is home to 1500 animals and welcomes more than 700,000 visitors each year.
“The masterplan will enable the zoo animals to have expanded habitats offering all the creature comforts they require, whilst supporting the breeding and research programs that are aimed at fighting extinction.”
