Offices to be built by historic St Patrick’s Church

Brisbane City Council has granted planning approval to the Archdiocese of Brisbane to build an eight-storey office block next to the historic St Patrick’s Church on Morgan Street, Fortitude Valley.

BVN’s design for the office building aims to create a contemporary, flexible and sustainable building with interwoven community, workplace and landscaped realms. “The building has a distinctive appearance provided through its facade types that respond to orientation and draw reference from the existing church,” a design statement read.

“Each floor features living greenery and access to the outdoors overlooking the Church to the South-West and the Brisbane CBD beyond.”

Built from 1880 to 1882, St Patrick’s is a Gothic-style church designed by Andrea Giovanni Stombuco. It was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992, in recognition of its association with the consolidation of the Catholic church in Queensland in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, as well as of its architectural style.

The Archdiocese of Brisbane plans to use the proceeds from the project to fund ongoing maintenance of St Patrick’s and its other historic property, the Cathedral of St Stephen.

Construction is expected to get underway in 2022, with completion scheduled for 2023.
