'Ring pull' viewing platform cracks open new experience at Perth Stadium

A 42-metre-high viewing platform being constructed over the roof of Perth’s Optus Stadium will create a new way to experience the playing field below.

Nicknamed the “ring pull” for its resemblance to the mechanism at the top of aluminium cans, the platform is designed by Hassell, who also designed the stadium in collaboration with Cox Architecture and HKS.

“We wanted to physically express the element of excitement that occurs within the stadium – a ‘ring-pull’ to the unique events below the platform,” said Hassell principal Peter Dean.

The platform will be located on western side of the stadium roof and will protrude five metres from the edge. It will be universally accessible with 360-degree views over Perth’s landscape. The platform will include rooftop seating for fans to watch games below as well as the potential for abseiling activities.

The platform will complement the existing rooftop tours of the stadium.

“Tours and attractions like this ‘top of the world’ experience, play a key role in quite literally elevating the enjoyment of visitors and encouraging them to stay longer and spend more money on a trip,” said WA tourism minister David Templeman.

“The spectacular views of this adrenaline-pumping tour will be perfect for people to share on social media, promoting our picturesque state.

“Developing innovative new experiences like this keeps WA’s tourism product fresh and adds another item to the incredible bucket-list experiences we have to offer.”

The platform is due to be completed in 2022.
