The National Gallery of Victoria has opened an exhibition of the architectural schemes submitted for the competition to design Australia’s largest gallery of contemporary art and design.
The Fox: NGV Contemporary will be a key part of the Victorian government’s $1.7 billion transformation of Melbourne Arts Precinct.
The design competition, held in 2021, was open only to Australian architects – an unprecedented move for a gallery of the NGV’s scale and civic profile.
“Australian architecture and design is of great interest around the world,” said Victorian government architect Jill Garner, who was also a juror for the design competition. “The national competition for The Fox: NGV Contemporary harnessed our spirit of creative communication, collaboration, and engagement to find an intriguing new landmark to enhance the cultural history and life of Melbourne. This exhibition celebrates the remarkable architectural visions of some of Australia’s best designers.”
Eight teams were selected to submit schemes for the first stage of the competition, and four proceeded to the second stage.
“The design competition for this landmark new gallery presented us with an extraordinary opportunity to support our country’s design and architecture sector,” said NGV director Tony Ellwood. “This important exhibition creates a vital platform that enables all eight competition teams to continue to share their vision for The Fox: NGV Contemporary with audiences.”
All stage one and two schemes are on exhibition at NGV Australia in Melbourne’s Federation Square.
The exhibition features architectural drawings, renders, models, material prototypes and video presentations. It also includes a hand-made model of the winning scheme, designed by a team led by Angelo Candalepas and Associates.
The Fox: NGV Contemporary Design Competition Exhibition is on display at the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia until 5 February.
