Architect appointed for Barangaroo Cutaway fitout

FJMT Studio has been appointed project architect on for a new fit-out of Barangaroo Cutaway – part of the NSW government’s redevelopment for the Sydney Harbour foreshore.

Located below the eastern end of Barangaroo Reserve, the Cutaway is a cultural venue with a 6,500-square-metre footprint on the harbour waterfront. Carved out beneath an artificial hill, the Cutaway is an expansive belowground space made from raw and imposing concrete, providing a flexible function space for large-scale events.

Originally designed by WMK Architecture, the Cutaway opened in 2015, and now the NSW government is commencing a “bespoke fitout” to resolve current “limitations and restrictions” including a lack of acoustic enclosures, onsite amenities and smaller venue spaces. The works will to transform the Cutaway into a venue for events, exhibitions, festivals and installations.

FJMT’s concept design was selected for the new “character and identity” it envisioned for the space, featuring three levels providing pre-function spaces, temporary gallery space and an educational space. FJMT’s design also proposes to recognize and celebrate First Nations people and culture through the design, as well as embedding sustainablility initiatives consistent with Barangaroo’s climate principles.

A planning application for the Cutaway is expected to be released later in 2022 for public exhibition.
