ARM to design new civic precinct in Melbourne

ARM Architecture has been appointed to prepare schematic designs for a new civic precinct, to be located adjacent to the Monash Civic Centre, originally designed by Harry Seidler and Associates.

ARM completed a feasibility study for the project in 2021, which evaluated the conditions of the site and presented a number of issues to council, including the deteriorating condition of the Glen Waverly Library (constructed 1973); the lack of dedicated space for civic ceremonies; and the opportunities to secure long term office accomodation for current and future staff.

The redevelopment will include a new multi-purpose building containing a library, community meeting spaces, staff accommodation, a grand hall, improved public open space, and an underground carpark.

City of Monash mayor Stuart James has welcomed the announcement of ARM’s appointment, stating the feasibility study has already proposed some promising design options for the new precinct.

“The proposed civic hall would give us an event space suitable for larger ceremonies, like our citizenship events and Sir John Monash Awards,” said James. “The project also includes improved car parking and landscaped areas.”

Council is currently seeking feedback from precinct stakeholders to ensure the design sufficiently embodies the needs of the community through community meetings and via online surveys.

“Given the significance of this site, we are very keen to hear from local traders, users of the precinct and the wider Monash community,” said James. After the a community consultation period, Council will then determine whether to progress with a detailed design.
