Canberra Theatre to be redeveloped

The ACT government has announced it has received 21 submissions of interested from Australian and international consortia in a search for a design and technical partner for the redevelopment of Canberra Theatre Centre.

The redevelopment and expansion will include the adaptive re-use of the existing Canberra Theatre to become a multi-purpose space capable of hosting a variety of performances, concerts and events, as well as a new theatre building with a 2,000-seat facility, the refurbishment of the Playhouse theatre and the significant expansion of the courtyard studio.

Up to three shortlisted consortia will be to participate in the next stage of the procurement process and to develop designs “that deliver excellence in urban design and architecture.” The successful consortia will be appointed in mid-2023.

“A modern theatre with greater capacity will enable larger and more varied blockbuster productions to come to Canberra and play to a regional population of approximately one million people,” said ACT chief minister Andrew Barr. “This is a great opportunity to attract regional tourism and spending in Canberra instead of Sydney or Melbourne.”

In July 2022, the ACT government announced it would commit a total of $28.44 million to the revitalisation of Civic Square and Canberra Theatre Centre.
