The draft plans for Hornsby Town Centre, in the Upper North Shore Sydney region, are now on public exhibition, designed to address future housing shortages and reduce urban sprawl.
Prepared by Cox Architecture, the masterplan reveals a proposed revitalization of the town centre to make it greener, more liveable, and more accessible for the community.
The Hornsby Shire Council said it envisaged “a place for people that reflects the uniqueness of the bushland setting, integrated around key public spaces where the city meets the bush.”
According to council, the masterplan will facilitate the creation of 4,500 new homes by 2036.
“Hornsby is the heart of the Shire where thousands of people live, work, learn, shop, and relax,” said Hornsby Shire mayor Philip Ruddock. “We’re excited that our new masterplan outlines a framework to revitalize and elevate its town centre, transforming it into a thriving destination.”
Key features of the masterplan influence the creation of low emissions buildings to support council’s zero emissions targets; residential towers to meet long-term dwelling targets set by state government; a network of green and connected public spaces; and a revamped transport hub to reduce conjection.
A new multipurpose community facility will include the construction of a public library, and a new town square will be established next to Hornsby Mall to “reinforce the Bushland Shire identity”.
Council said it has been consulting extensively with the community and key stakeholders to inform the plans, and Ruddock has encouraged all members of the community to review the designs and provide feedback.
The Hornsby Town Centre draft masterplan is on exhibition until 30 September 2022.
