Green light for biomedical engineering research centre

A biomedical research centre has been approved for construction by the Victorian government .

Denton Corker Marshall unveiled plans for the designs in January 2021, with Minister for Medical Research Jaala Pulford officially announcing receipt of planning approval on 11 April 2022.

The Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery (ACMD) will be the country’s first hospital-based biomedical engineering research centre.

The facility is currently operating on a small scale out St Vincent’s Hospital’s Fitzroy campus. When the new centre opens in 2024, it will house specialized laboratories to enhance the capabilities of Melbourne’s biomedical precinct, as well as a new education centre with dedicated teaching facilities for future health professionals.

The ACMD will include 3D printing laboratories, a kinetics lab and rooms for sensitive hearing and vision technologies.

An existing 11-storey wing will be demolished to make way for a new $206 million building, which will house nine organization partners under one roof.

These include St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, St Vincent’s Institute, the Bionics Institute, Centre for Eye Research, University of Melbourne, RMIT, Swinburne University of Technology, Australian Catholic University and the University of Wollongong Australia.

ACMD chief executive Erol Harvey said the new building will “break down barriers” through a dedicated building in the heart of St Vincent’s, to solve some of the world’s toughest healthcare challenges.

The project is being funded by the Victorian government, federal government, St Vincent’s Health Australia and ACMD itself.
