Institute's Queensland regional conference to examine future practice

The Australian Institute of Architects’ 2022 Queensland Regional Symposium will take place in Yeppoon, engaging with the theme “Regional Futures: A Collaborative Perspective”.

“Regional practice requires agile and collaborative mindsets, which provides the foundations for transdisciplinary practice and creative solutions to stakeholder engagement,” the Institute said. Collaborators from across the country will come together to consider future best practice by examining current social, economic, cultural, climactic and political conditions and the challenge they pose for design.

Queensland chapter president Amy Degenhart said Yeppoon was an appropriate setting for the symposium for its cultural significance and natural landscape.

“The name Yeppoon is believed to mean ‘the place where the waters meet’,” said Degenhart. “This is ideal for our symposium, which explore ideas and possibilities presented by the past, present and emerging best practice examples in the regions – many of which are highly collaborative in nature.”

The events of recent climate disasters, from floods to fires, have inspired the architectural community to think more deeply about sustainable practices and practical responses to climate change. This symposium will provide an immersive knowledge sharing and learning experience to consider the challenges for regional architecture and architects, and consider new ways of designing architectural outcomes.

Speakers include Peta Heffernan, Ed Johnson, Don Watson, and among others, with a keynote presentation from Kerstin Thompson.

The symposium will be held on the 27-29 October across locations in Yeppoon and Rockhampton. For more information or to register, visit the Institute’s website.
