Murcutt, Candalepas design beachside ‘neighbourhood’ for children's charity

Children’s charity Royal Far West have called on two esteemed architects to help redevelop its premise to help fund its services into the future.

A development application for a new beachfront “neighbourhood” designed by Pritzker Prize laurate Glenn Murcutt and two-time Sulman Medal recipient Angelo Candalepas, has submitted to the Northern Beaches Council in Sydney.

Murcutt and Candalepas were commissioned in 2019 by non-governmental organization Royal Far West to revitalize and grow its beachfront premises, which it has occupied for close to 100 years.

The DA is for the revitalisation of a100-year-old home cornering Wentworth Street and South Steyne at the iconic Manly Beach.

The charity is dedicated to improving the wellbeing developmental health of children from rural and remote communities by helping to house children and their families in order to be closer to medical treatment and respite.

Royal Far West approached the architects to create also a mixed-use campus of residential apartments, commercial and retail spaces and landscaped areas. The apartments will be sold on a 99-year leasehold basis with the proceeds going to support the charity’s services into the future.

The development application includes the demolition of some existing structures on the site; the construction of a new mixed-use buildings including residential apartments; alteration and addition to the existing Drummond House and Centre for Country Kids; new basement-level parking; and a landscaped public forecourt space that will open to the public.

The development application is currently under assessment by the Northern Beaches Council.
