‘Sculptural’ addition to Google Australia's Pyrmont campus

A former gatehouse at a historic navy yard in Sydney’s Jones Bay will be replaced with a new workplace building, which will further expand Google Australia’s Pyrmont campus.

The proposed building on Pirrama Road, designed by Warren and Mahoney, will complement a previous proposal to refurbish two heritage listed buildings, also designed by Warren and Mahoney.

The former gatehouse building in the Royal Edward Victualling Yard (REVY) precinct will be demolished to make way for a new building housing end of trip facilities on the ground floor and workplaces above.

Google Site D designed by Warren and Mahoney.

“The new building’s scale responds to the surrounding built context – providing an appropriate transition between the single-level Arrow Marine buildings and the five level REVY B
wing,” the architects said. “The pavilion maintains a subservient relationship to the REVY, whilst providing an intermediary for the urban scale along Pirrama road.”

“The distinctive sculptural form and planted facade draws a strong contrast with the rigid, orthogonal and static presence of the brick heritage facades. Creating a clear contemporary element that sits respectfully in scale and proportion against both the Arrow Marine building and the larger REVY B.

“There will be a clear distinction of new materiality versus existing, in order to maintain a visual separation and make sure REVY is the centrepiece of the scheme..

Aspect Studios is the landscape architect for the project. The design proposes screening elements that would create a softened experience for pedestrians along Pirrama Road.
