A new “world class” cancer research centre adjacent to the Alfred Hospital has been approved by the City of Melbourne.
Designed by Lyons Architecture, the $94 million Victorian Melanoma and Clinical Trials Centre at 545 St Kilda Road will be distinctive for its façade, which draws inspiration of from the layers of skin. The façade will provide a veil to the building, which will filter natural light and create a softly lit environment within.
The centre will house patient care facilities as well as education spaces, laboratories and workspaces. It will also include wellness gardens on the ground plane. Rush Wright Associates is the landscape architect for the project.

The centre will be dedicated to clinical research into the early detection and prevention of skin cancers including melanoma. It will also be part of a national clinical trial network.
“This is an incredibly exciting development for Melbourne which will add to our reputation as a hub for world-leading medical research,’’ Melbourne’s deputy lord mayor Nicholas Reece told the Herald Sun.
The centre is funded by Victorian and federal governments, The Alfred Foundation and Monash University. Construction is expected to begin in mid-2022 and the centre will be operational in early 2024.
